CXS (ARC Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science) – Annual Reports (2008-2013)

“The incredibly beautiful images created by CXS are very exciting for a designer to work with.” – Alicia Whetton, Senior Designer

Client

Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science (CXS)

For 6 years running (from 2008-2013), Idaho designed and created the Annual Reports for Melbourne University’s ARC Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science.

The Annual Report was an essential document for CXS’s reputation and future funding commitments. It reinforced and communicated the organisation’s important work in its field of expertise, demonstrates its strong governance and management practices, and is essential to ensure the centre receives government research funding.

Challenge

The research being conducted by CXS was exciting and significant. Every year we looked at how we could present the Centre’s Annual Report in a unique way that celebrated the important achievements from that year.

Solution

We needed to ensure the design and layout of the Annual Report reflected the highly technical and innovative nature of the organisation, without appearing boring or overly “scientific”.

A number of stylistic and printing techniques, including foil printing, embossing, die-cuts, and fold outs were applied to create a unique document for CXS.

The first CXS Annual Report was one the  first projects of its type in Victoria to use a new method of cold foil finishing. This required us to work closely with the printer to develop a design that used the technique in the most effective way. The final outcome resulted in a very positive impact and feedback from our client and their stakeholders.
