ACEMS (ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers) – Corporate Website

“The Centre was in it’s early days, so still defining their identity and message. Whilst this was a challenge, it was also a great time for us to get involved, to help them find their voice.” – Alicia Whetton, Senior Designer.

Client

Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS)

ACEMS were a new centre when we first met them, and needed a website to start communicating with their audience.

Challenge

There are two broad categories of work under the centre’s umbrella – applied and theoretical mathematics. Whilst applied mathematics can be easy to present visually – with outcome based images such as traffic, marine and disaster management applications – the theoretical work is so complex and beyond the understanding of most people. A major challenge was how to show a balance of both important types.

Solution

The site has evolved since the site first went live, as the centre has grown. Bold abstract mathematical imagery helps to represent the more intangible theoretical work they do, in addition to the practical applications. A large home page slider communicates the centre’s purpose, then important news, events, partnerships, programs and publications.

There is a huge amount of content feeding into the site, so it was important that we worked closely with a number of staff from the centre to make sure it was manageable, and considered future needs to make the information easy to reorganise if necessary.
